When: Mondays March 23, March 30, April 6, April 13 from 7-9:30PM ET
Where: On Zoom! Join from anywhere.
Who: We’ll cap the class at 8 people to foster a close-knit environment.
In this four week creative nonfiction seminar for writers with all levels of experience, we will use the daily, micro, and mundane as entry points into the broader themes of our work. We will rely on observation as the first task of writing, using the material of our lives to guide us into questions of love, family, loss, career, passion, and art. Students will be taken through readings by Chelsea Hodson, Ross Gay, Brenda Miller, Chloe Caldwell, Sarah Manguso, and others with accompanying prompts and practices to generate new essays each week.
This class is based on the premise that big ideas, experiences, and feelings are best expressed through specificity and that specificity is best cultivated through close attention. Together, we will focus on process, intuition, and attention as a means to both build our writing practice and find meaning in the mundane. Each class will include a reading, a discussion of the reading, a workshop, and a prompt. Students will leave the class with newly generated work and tools to continue to refine their writing.
